As a mother, I’ve learned to value and embody patience more deeply each day. My daughter Ally, an autistic artist, has taught me the profound beauty and importance of patience in ways I could have never imagined.
I love watching Ally do her art and I know that her finished work is one of my best chances to see into her soul. Today, I want to share the story behind her latest painting. It’s a piece that beautifully encapsulates the challenges and triumphs of patience and tells a story about what it’s like to live with autism.
In life, we’re all constantly faced with challenges, both big and small. Whether it’s dealing with the unpredictability that comes with autism or just navigating the ups and downs of daily life, our patience is often tested.
Every day presents new challenges. For those of us who love and care for someone with autism, these challenges can feel magnified. What I’ve come to learn is that these challenges also come with choices. We have the power to choose between responding with frustration and a sense of defeat or with patience and positivity.
Which brings me to Ally’s painting of a sea turtle, which holds a special place in my heart. This piece isn’t just a portrayal of a turtle; it’s a metaphor for Ally’s own journey of coming out of her shell.
Turtles, with their protective shells, remind us of the comfort zones we retreat to when the world gets to be too much. For Ally, who navigates the world with autism, these protective spaces are vital. Yet, just like the turtle, she has found the courage to emerge and explore beyond her comfort zone. Her painting captures the delicate balance between the safety of her shell and the bravery of stepping out into the world.
The turtle painting is more than art; it’s a celebration of Ally’s progress, her resilience, and the beauty of discovering the world beyond her shell. It embodies her choice to respond to challenges with patience and positivity, even though that path can be difficult.
Artists With Autism Showcase Personified Patience
We all have preconceived notions of how life should unfold, but life with autism requires us to let go of these expectations. For Ally, and for many autistic artists, the world is experienced differently. Their perceptions, their responses, and their creations are uniquely their own. Ally’s turtle painting represents her perspective, her patience, and her determination to express herself despite the challenges.
For those with autism, the experience of patience can be very different. The world can feel overwhelming, and simple tasks can become big and sometimes formidable challenges. These feelings can make you want to go into your shell, seeking solace in a place that feels more predictable and controlled. Ally’s art journey has been a path of learning to come out of her shell, to face the world with courage and patience.
Patience requires tolerance, and that’s something that can be especially challenging for those who have developed differently. Tolerance for oneself, for the process, and for the imperfections that come with learning and growing is essential.
In her turtle painting, Ally captures the frustrations and tolerance as she learned to come out of her shell. The process of creating this piece was filled with moments of struggle, as Ally worked through her frustrations and learned to tolerate the imperfections of her art. But the end result truly speaks to her incredible strength and perseverance.
As I reflect on Ally’s journey and her latest artwork, I am filled with immense pride and gratitude. Her autism art has taught me so much about patience, resilience, and the power of embracing our unique journeys. Every brushstroke is a testament to her incredible spirit and her unwavering determination to shine.
At House of Shine, we know that patience is not just a virtue; it’s a way of life. Through Ally’s autism artwork, I have learned to appreciate the beauty of patience and the incredible strength it takes to face each day with courage and hope.
